Not Ready for the Junkyard
Although they've
been retired from TV, these cars are still attracting viewers.
Remember any of the buggies you see
above? They used to squeal across the TV screen in prime time,
driven by the likes of
Batman and the Munsters. Today,
with the quick obsolescence of both autos and TV series, the only
viewers they attract are
visitors to the Hollywood Motorama
Museum or devotees of syndicated reruns. Designed by automotive
fantasizer, George
Barris, the cars include (clockwise
from lower left): a Stutz Bearcat replica from Bearcats!, the Munster
Koach, which combines
the finer features of a dune buggy
and a hearse, a pint-sized Jeep from The Bugaloos, the Green Hornet's
limo, Black Beauty,
the Monkeemobile and the
Batmobile. Center: the customized vintage Olds that Jed Clampett
and family still drive through
the "Hills of Beverly" (in
syndication) - a relic of the days when producers didn't have to worry
about the price of a gallon of gas.
